Project work involves synthesizing block copolymers, soft colloidal particles, and ionic liquids, and studying their phase behaviors and nanostructures using X-ray scattering and microscopic techniques. A strong candidate will have experience with organic/polymer synthesis (preferably under strictly air- and water-free conditions), small angle X-ray scattering, and/or basic electron microscopy measurements. A suite of other characterization methods are available at CINT. Candidates are expected to collaborate with scientists in various disciplines to perform cutting-edge materials science research which supports Laboratory missions and maintains Laboratory Excellence in Science and Technology. The CINT is a national user facility funded by the DOE Office of Science to provide research capabilities in nanoscience to a worldwide community of users. The MPA-CINT group stewards the CINT Gateway facility at LANL, which together with the Core facility at Sandia National Laboratory form the entire CINT user facility. Scientific thrusts in CINT include: Nanophotonics and Optical Nanomaterials; Quantum Materials Systems; Soft, Biological and Composite Nanomaterials; and In-Situ Characterization and Nanomechanics. Additional information on the user facility is available at https://cint.lanl.gov. The primary work location for this position will be the Gateway Facility in Los Alamos, New Mexico, with possibility of occasional business trips to the Core Facility in Albuquerque, New Mexico. | | | | | | What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: · Ph.D. (completed within the last five years or soon to be completed) in Polymer Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or closely related fields, together with a strong background and hands-on experience in one or more polymer synthesis techniques (including but not limited to anionic polymerization, controlled radical polymerization, and emulsion polymerization) and/or related organic synthesis methods. · Excellent written and oral communication skills as demonstrated by writing and/or editing technical journals, papers, or proposals. · Strong interpersonal and communication skills as demonstrated by presenting scientific works at conferences, workshops, seminars, etc. · Ability to work creatively and independently on multiple projects as demonstrated by meeting deadlines, goals, and requirements. Desired Qualifications: - Experience with synthesis of soft/polymeric colloidal particles and/or narrow-dispersity block copolymers.
- Experience in building and/or modifying an organic/polymer synthesis setup (e.g., connecting gas lines in a fume hood, handling Schlenk/vacuum lines, assembling synthesis reactors)
- Experience with structural characterization using X-ray/neutron scattering, electron microscopy, and/or atomic force microscopy.
- Experience and/or interest in machine learning applied to chemistry and materials science.
- Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.
