Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. Los Alamos National Laboratory is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. This staff scientist position is within the Theoretical Division in the Climate, Ocean and Sea-Ice Modeling (COSIM) Team, which develops advanced ocean and ice models for the study of climate and climate change and its impacts on regions and societal assets throughout the globe. The COSIM team seeks a staff scientist to work on a range of issues related to the changing coastal ocean environment at the land-ocean nexus, including topics in sediment transport, coastal erosion, ecogeomorphology, and impacts of sea-level rise. We seek candidates with diverse research experience with a preference for individuals with one or more of the following: experience and knowledge of coastal-zone ecogeomorphology, remote sensing, and/or climate modeling; experience in construction, analysis and/or application of physical models; and the incorporation of in-situ and remote observations for model development, testing and application. Our team’s effort is in support of the newly developed U.S. Department of Energy climate model, the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM). A particular focus of E3SM is fully coupled, global, high-resolution simulations of the Earth system relevant for energy and coastal impacts. Within this broad activity, the focus of Los Alamos National Laboratory is the role of the ocean and ice systems in the global climate and carbon cycle, the role of the ocean and ice systems in sea-level rise and the impacts of sea-level rise. Scientist Level 3 ($96,600 - $161,300) The successful candidate will be required to: Scientist Level 4 ($116,900—$197,000) In addition to the duties outlined above, the Scientist 3 will be required to: | | | | | | What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Demonstrated scientific excellence as evidenced by submission and publication in refereed journals. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively with other project members to understand, evaluate and improve our ability to simulate one or more aspect of the evolving land-river-estuary-ocean interface. Demonstrated experience and success in proposal writing, project management and mentoring. Experience in geophysics, fluid dynamics, solid mechanics, climate modeling, physics, applied mathematics, or a closely related field.
Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 4 Demonstrated experience building and leading effective teams and enhance the technical and professional skills of junior and experienced staff through active mentoring and training. Established track record for serving as the lead in technical decision-making and direction at the large-scale project level. Evidence of skill in developing new program initiatives relevant to the Department of Energy’s climate modeling mission.
Desired Skills: Experience in construction, analysis or application of ocean, river, land-surface, sea-ice and/or land-ice models. Expertise in shell scripting and/or data-analysis languages (e.g. Python, Matlab, R) and/ with languages compatible with high-performance computing (e.g. Fortran90, C, C); Desire to take on leadership role in extending the COSIM science portfolio through the ocean coastal system to the land-surface system.
Education: A Ph.D. in geophysics, fluid dynamics, solid mechanics, climate modeling, physics, applied mathematics, or a closely related field. Notes to Applicants: Please include a curriculum vitae, names of three references, and a cover letter detailing qualifications and research interests that are specific to the job requirements outlined in this job advertisement with your application. | | | | | | Where You Will WorkLocated in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security.
