We are offering a postdoctoral position to pursue research in polymer science and theoretical biology as part of a joint theoretical and experimental project funded at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The project is focused on designing and producing synthetic peptoid polymers and understanding the physics and physical chemistry of these biologically-inspired materials including their solvent interactions. The applicant will be expected to interact with a range of theoretical and experimental team members spanning materials science, chemistry, bioinformatics, and molecular biology to further research objectives and to participate in writing publications. The Theoretical Biology and Biophysics Groups is a vibrant research organization with activity spanning protein physics including solvent interactions, biophysical simulation, mathematical epidemiology, cell and molecular biology, phylogentics, and vaccine design. Our group has a wide variety of collaborators, most importantly here with experimentalists and theoreticians in the Bioscience, Chemistry, and Materials Physics and Applications Divisions.
What You Need
Desired Skills:
We are looking for enthusiastic, creative scientists with analytic skills, and experience with computation and polymer and/or protein science. The candidate should have good analytic, data analysis, programming, simulation, and spoken and written English skills. Candidates with a track record of publication and experience in protein and/or polymer dynamics including solvent interactions will be given preference.
Education: A PhD degree within the last 5 years (at the date of appointment). The specific subject of one’s PhD degree is not restrictive, but usually a PhD in physics, chemistry, or mathematical biology is appropriate. A person who has held a PhD degree for more than 5 years is not eligible for a postdoctoral position at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Notes to Applicants:
For initial consideration for this position and more details about the scientific areas of research, send an e-mail including your CV and brief statement of interest to paulf@lanl.gov and ct@lanl.gov. We will only reply to those candidates whose applications we are interested in pursuing further. After initial screening, transcripts and 3 or more letters of recommendation may be requested, followed by an interview (preferably at LANL).
Los Alamos National Laboratory offers a generous and comprehensive benefits package and current salary guidelines start at ~US$73,600, with adjustments for experience and time since PhD. This position is initially for two years.
This position is open until filled; subject to funding availability and eligibility for employment. Only the Laboratory’s Human Resources Department can make an offer of employment.
