The Physics and Chemistry of Materials (T-1) and Fluid Dynamics and Solid Mechanics (T-3) groups of the Theoretical Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory are seeking outstanding candidates for one or more post-doctoral research associates in the areas of theoretical solid mechanics. The groups conduct research in theoretical and computational continuum dynamics; including large-scale molecular dynamics simulations, single crystal, and macromechanical (polycrystal) modeling. This is a multi-disciplinary team with backgrounds and experience in diverse fields of engineering, applied physics, computational methods, and applied mathematics. Postdoctoral research associates in the following areas are sought:
(1) Development, implementation, and application of large deformation, anisotropic single crystal models for low symmetry, energetic molecular crystals that include nonlinear elasticity, plastic slip, twinning, and damage.
(2) Atomistic and molecular dynamics simulations of the thermo-mechanical properties of molecular crystals, including equation of state, anisotropic elasticity, crystal defects, and crystal plasticity.
The thermomechanical models will be guided by and validated against the results of state-of-the-art impact experiments with time-resolved, in situ x-ray diagnostics.
Further questions on the positions should be directed to cawkwell@lanl.gov and addessio@lanl.gov.
What You Need
· A strong background and demonstrated research experience in the theory and simulation of the mechanical behavior of solids; excellent oral and written communication skills; and the ability to work in both team and independent research environments.
· Access to export controlled information which typically requires US Citizenship or Permanent Residency (Green Card Holder).
Education: Ph.D. or equivalent degree within the last five years in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or a closely related field.
Research Location: The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security and is located in the mountains of northern New Mexico, USA. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the surety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concern.
Additional Details:
Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Candidates may be considered for a Director's Fellowship and outstanding candidates may be considered for the prestigious Marie Curie, Richard P. Feynman, J. Robert Oppenheimer, or Frederick Reines Fellowships.
