This position reports to the Construction Engineering Lead.
Perform as a construction engineer in a broad range of construction engineering work at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) involving both self-performed work and oversight of subcontractor performed work.
Provides construction engineering assistance to Superintendents and Subcontract Technical Representatives (STR), verifies materials, equipment, workmanship, and assures construction activities meet design requirements.
This position will interface daily with Design Engineers, Project Managers, Subcontractors, STRs, Superintendents and other Project team members.
Civil Construction Engineer 3 ($78,400-$128,200):
In addition to the duties outlined for Construction Engineer 2, the Construction Engineer 3 duties are as follows:
This position reports to the Construction Engineering Manager.
Act as Construction Engineer Lead if assigned.
Mentor and guide Construction Engineer 2 in performing construction engineering duties.
Resolve construction issues with Design Engineers, Project Managers, Subcontractors, STRs, Superintendents and other Project team members.
The perspective individual may be asked to perform as a Project Field Engineer on a moderate sized project.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance.
Must be able to be certified to the Human Reliability Program (HRP).
Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or scientific discipline or specialized courses incivil related disciplines, and/or extensive actual work experience and certifications leading to the thorough understanding of the knowledge described above and a minimum of four years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledgeable in Civil Engineering construction activities; including soils, concrete, reinforcing steel, and structural steel fabrication and erection.
Understanding of request for proposals, project scope, estimates, schedules, and permits.
Experience providing oversight of both self-performed and subcontract work activities.
Familiarity with construction scheduling, code and specification requirements, material take-offs, document control and records requirements.
Experience and skill in identifying problem areas, investigating alternative solutions, and determining appropriate path forward.
Excellent oral and written communication skills with experience preparing clear and concise inspection and oversight reports.
Additional Job Requirements for the Construction Engineer 3:
Advanced knowledge in Civil Engineering construction activities; including soils, concrete, reinforcing steel, and structural steel fabrication and erection.
In-depth understanding of request for proposals, project scope, estimates, schedules, and permits.
Extensive experience and skill in identifying problem areas, investigating alternative solutions, and determining appropriate path forward.
In-depth knowledge of Subcontract Technical Representative (STR) responsibilities.
Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or scientific discipline or specialized courses in civil related disciplines, and/or extensive actual work experience and certifications leading to the thorough understanding of the knowledge described above and a minimum of eight years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Skills:
Strong knowledge and/or certification of civil testing in both field and laboratory settings is highly desired.
Knowledge of Subcontract Technical Representative (STR) responsibilities.
Have a strong familiarity with Standard Work Process Procedures.
Self-engaged in becoming an SME in codes associated with job function.
Notes to Applicants:
Must be capable of passing respirator fitness testing.
The job requires extensive time to be spent in the field performing oversight of construction activities.
Must be able to physically traverse construction sites in order to perform duties.This may include lifting items weighing up to 40 pounds, climbing ladders, scaffolds, crawling in low height areas routinely.

The Management of Functions Construction Management organization (MOF-CM) integrates construction leadership, direction, and management to ensure that quality services are provided to the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Additional Details:
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
