The Physics Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory invites outstanding applicants for two postdoctoral positions in the Neutrino Physics team of the Subatomic Physics Group (P-25) to work on the MicroBooNE, SBND, ProtoDUNE and DUNE experiments. LANL has leading roles in the short and long-baseline neutrino program. On the short-baseline program, the group plays a key role in the areas of neutrino oscillation and detector physics analyses in MicroBooNE, and development of slow controls and the photon detection system for SBND. On DUNE, the group is involved in multiple efforts, including calibration, cryogenic instrumentation, and slow controls. Based on their interest, selected candidates will work on either MicroBooNE/SBND or ProtoDUNE/DUNE in any of the above listed areas. On ProtoDUNE/DUNE, the selected candidate will primarily work on developing a laser calibration system for DUNE to be first deployed in ProtoDUNE at CERN and perform data analysis and validation. Depending on the selected/assigned projects, candidates may be based at LANL, Fermilab and/or CERN for short or long periods of time. The candidate must have or expect to complete soon a Ph.D. in physics, preferably in high energy particle or nuclear physics, and must be less than 5 years since the Ph.D. was granted. The postdoctoral terms are for 2 years, with an option to renew for a third year.
At LANL, we hold a deep commitment towards developing and promoting a culturally inclusive community. We respect, understand, and value differences that embody principles of diversity and inclusion. We strongly encourage applications from members of groups that are underrepresented in science and technology.
What You Need
- Experience with data analysis tools typically used in particle or nuclear physics
- Good oral and written communication
Desired Skills:
- Experience with lasers and their operation
- Experience with calibration techniques, especially in noble liquids (e.g. Argon/Xenon detectors)
- Experience with slow control system like EPICS or LabVIEW
Notes to Applicants:
Applications must be submitted online. Applicants are required to provide a cover letter, curriculum vitae, publication list, including a statement of research experience and physics interests, and the names and addresses of at least three persons whom we could contact for reference letters. Reference letters will be asked at a later stage of the selection process. For any questions related to the job ad, contact Sowjanya Gollapinni (sowjanya@lanl.gov). Consideration of applications will begin October 1, 2019 and continue until the positions are filled.
The successful applicant maybe stationed at LANL, Fermilab or CERN based on topics chosen/assigned.
Salary: Competitive salaries are based on the date the PhD degree requirements were completed or the degree was awarded. On the anniversary of these dates, salaries are automatically adjusted to the next higher level, e.g. PhD + 0: $74,000; PhD + 1: $75,900, etc. For more information go to
