What You Will Do

The research teams within the Bioscience Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) perform research in a broad array of applications of biotechnology and life sciences.  The Biosecurity and Public Health (B-10) Group works to stop the spread of disease—from naturally occurring or manmade threats—requiring an in-depth understanding of pathogens, how they work, the host response to pathogens, as well as advanced methods for detection, diagnosis, and treatment. 

There are several challenging projects in need of a research technologist with skills in laboratory experiments and data analysis in applying various ‘omic approaches to understanding human diseases, biofuels, environmental systems, and synthetic biology.In this position, you will perform various ‘omics experiments in the laboratory, and develop techniques to analyze and interpret the data produced.  You will leverage your skills on multiple projects.

• Demonstrated experience as a skilled technologist to assist in the design and execution of laboratory experiments to generate ‘omic data (genomics, transcriptomics metabolomics, proteomics, etc.). 
• Experience in sample preparation for DNA and RNA sequencing, mass spectrometry, etc.
• Demonstrated experience in assisting with designing experiments and analysis pipelines that integrate data from laboratory experiments.    
• Demonstrated experience with several data types and formats.
• Ability to work in collaboration with internal and external team members on large and small projects.
• Demonstrated experience in preparing written reports and presentations for briefings.
• Ability to contribute and/or co-author scientific publications.

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience in bioinformatics and analysis of ‘omics data.
• Demonstrated computer programming skills in one or more of the following: Python, C++, Perl, etc.
• Demonstrated experience in multiple sample preparation techniques and analysis.
• Ability and inclination to contribute to a wide range of basic-research and mission science programs as needs and opportunities evolve over time.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance (generally requires U.S. citizenship).

Education: Bachelor’s degree in laboratory science or computational analysis (e.g. bioinformatics) and a minimum of 2 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Clearance:  Q (Position will be cleared to this level).  Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.

*Eligibility requirements:  To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
