Overview: Los Alamos National Laboratory is a multidisciplinary research institution
engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. The postdoc position
is within the Climate, Ocean and Sea-Ice Modeling (COSIM) group which develops
advanced ocean and ice models for the study of climate and climate change.
Detailed Description: The COSIM group seeks a postdoc to study the role of the
Southern Ocean in mediating the oceanic update of heat and carbon dioxide. The scope
of the project could include the study of air-sea exchange, ocean mixed layer physics,
re-stratification via mesoscale eddies and ventilation time scales. The primary tool used
in the project will be MPAS-Ocean, a multi-scale ocean model intended for the study of
ocean processes ranging from sub-mesoscale to global scales of motion. The study will
be carried out in close collaboration with Dr. Bill Large at NCAR who is leading the
overall project. Opportunities for frequent or extended visits to NCAR are available.
Keywords: climate, ocean modeling, mesoscale eddies, ocean mixed-layer physics,
computational physics.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements: Experience and knowledge related to the design,
construction and evaluation of computational models. Software skills including expertise
in high-performance computing languages (e.g. Fortran, C, C++) and knowledge of a
scripting frameworks (e.g. Python, MATLAB, NCL). A solid educational foundation in
the following areas: numerical methods, fluid dynamics and applied math. Requirements
also include demonstrated ability to work in a team setting.
Desired Skills: The successful candidate will have demonstrated the following:
scientific excellence as evidenced by submission and publication of authored
publications in refereed journals, the ability to design climate model experiments to test
hypotheses, and the ability to analyze and interpret climate simulation data.
Education: A Ph.D. in physics, physical oceanography, atmospheric sciences,
computational physics, applied math or closely related field.
Notes to Applicant: Send a curriculum vitae, digitized copies of transcripts, names of
three references, and a cover letter detailing qualifications and research interests to
Todd Ringler at ringler@lanl.gov. Please include “Southern Ocean Postdoc” in the email
subject line. Applications will be reviewed as received with the intent of filling the
positions before May 15, 2015. Start date can be no later than November 15, 2015.
Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.
