Our High-Performance Computing Division provides production high performance computing systems services to the Laboratory. The High Performance Computing Environments group (HPC-ENV) takes responsibility for the broad range of HPC platforms, monitoring and data analytics, programming and runtime environments, software, application support and readiness, user support & services for a large and diverse customer base. We provide support and services to many production platforms at a world-class computing facility to ensure customers can accomplish their research and mission at extreme scale. The focus for the HPC Consulting team is to support and enhance the productivity of the LANL HPC user community by providing quality technical support in a timely manner. We achieve this by providing customer focused, single point of contact for HPC systems, services, tools and technical support. The HPC Consulting Team provides support for all production HPC platforms in various networks, including help for programming languages, debugging, parallel computing, HPC operating systems, utilities, libraries, file systems and interconnects, scripting, archival storage, desktop backup (TSM), file transfer, HPC network, and Tri-Lab support. The Division’s goal is to create an effective HPC environment in which scientists can be as productive as possible. Additionally, we support selected research activities that we deem important to our mission.
This position will be filled at either the Scientist 2 or Scientist 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. Scientist 2 - ($89,900- $148,300) The successful candidate will be required to: Provide in-depth customer support as part of the Consulting Team within HPC-ENV to scientific users in the areas of programming languages, operating systems, storage, libraries, utilities, code performance and other facets of the HPC environment Participate in the weekly consult support schedule by answering questions, solving technical problems by telephone electronic mail, and in person Interact with end-users and the HPC user support teams Work independently and also interactively with other support team members Contribute to technical documentation, presentations, and/or giving tutorials in classroom, user group, or team situations Communicating and collaborating frequently with customers, other cross-Group and cross-Division teams as well as other HPC sites
Scientist 3 - ($98,900- $165,100) In addition to the duties outlined above, the Scientist 3 will be required to: Be a technical lead in an HPC discipline within the Consulting team Provide in-depth application support to users Work as a technical leader to implement customer solutions to current problems and enhance our HPC user environment Provide technical direction and help to continuously improve HPC user support at LANL Represent LANL HPC Consulting at workshops, meetings, and conferences with other HPC and DOE sites Provide technical and professional expertise to junior staff through mentoring and training Propose and implement solutions when presented with projects in our HPC environment Communicate the strategies and successes of HPC Division to Laboratory organizations
| | | | | | What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Strong user level Linux background Knowledge and expertise in a high-level programming language such as C/ C++ or Fortran Experience with scripting languages such as, Perl, Python, and Bash or Tcsh shell scripting Demonstrated experience working effectively under the pressure of frequent interruptions and conflicting priorities Effective interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to work within a team environment and with customers Strong verbal and written communication skills
Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 3: In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Scientist 3 level requires: Desired Skills: Extensive knowledge and practical experience at the advanced level in programming using such as C, C++ Fortran, Bash, Perl, Python, and Tcsh Knowledge and experience working or supporting users in HPC environments Programming in a parallel computing environment with MPI, OpenMP (threads), or both Experience with tools and methods for optimization and debugging in a highly parallel environment Experience with visualization software and tools Experience in a classified computing environment Experience in developing scientific computer programs or systems that support scientific computing environments A recent, successful customer service role and an active Q clearance are highly desirable Modern programming languages and models (PGAS, Chapel, Legion, etc.) Experience with GPUs, Cuda, OpenACC, OpenCL, etc Experience with virtual machines, Linux containers or related concepts Experience with large-scale computational simulations
