With an emphasis on accurate and defensible data analysis, CCS-6 provides statistical research, development, and application for the weapons, national security, and open science missions of the Laboratory. The group has approximately 30 employees, mostly PhD statisticians, and an approximate annual budget of $17M spread over areas of application including materials science, environmental modeling, energy infrastructure, space and planetary systems, cosmology, epidemiology, cybersecurity and network science, image and signal processing, and the analysis of complex engineered systems including the nation’s nuclear stockpile. In addition, the group is recognized internationally for research in many areas of statistics including Bayesian methods, uncertainty quantification, computer experiments, statistical computing, spatial statistics, time series methods, reliability; design of experiments, functional data analysis, stochastic processes, advanced regression methods, data fusion, and graphical models. The Deputy Group Leader will participate part time in the technical and administrative management of the group. The DGL will assist the Group Leader in setting strategic direction; identifying and developing new opportunities; recruiting, mentoring and team building; and collaborative outreach inside and outside of the Lab. The DGL will also assist in administrative management of safety and security, performance appraisal, salary management, staff planning, and budgeting. Additionally, the Deputy Group Leader will be a member of the Division leadership team with additional opportunities at this level and beyond. The remainder of the Deputy Group Leader’s time will be spent on scientific duties including contributing to innovation in statistical methodology, advancing basic and applied science through rigorous statistical modeling, addressing statistical challenges in national and global security, initiating and developing new projects and proposals, mentoring students and postdocs, and participating in professional activities including peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and service to the statistics community. | | | | | | What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Demonstrated ability in research, development, and application of statistical methodology. Education/Experience: PhD in Statistics or similar, or equivalent education and experience. Desired Qualifications: Knowledge of LANL and Department of Energy missions, funding sources, and programs of relevance to the group, division and Laboratory. Leadership experience at any level. Track record of technical program and project development in areas of interest to CCS-6. National visibility in the field of statistics through publication and professional activity.
