| Job Title | | Scientist 2/3 Modeling of Southern ocean Climate (Scientist 2/3) | | | | Location | | Los Alamos, NM, US | | | | Organization Name | | T-3/Fluid Dynamics And Solid Mechanics | | | | Minimum Salary | | | | | | Maximum Salary | | | | | | | | What You Will Do The Fluid Dynamics and Solid Mechanics group (T-3) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking qualified applicants in the areas of Earth system model simulation and analysis with a specific focus in the area of Southern Ocean climate processes. Candidates with experience in modeling and analyzing coupled ocean, ice, and atmospheric processes in the Southern Ocean, or Antarctic ocean-and-ice-shelf interactions are especially encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will contribute heavily to the development and application of the DOE’s new earth system model, E3SM, which is focused on addressing science questions related to DOE missions. Within E3SM, LANL oversees the ocean, sea ice, and land ice model components and contributes expertise on high-latitude climate processes, including coupled interactions between the ocean, atmosphere, sea ice, and land ice. Of particular interest for this position is an understanding for how coupled Southern Ocean climate processes influence current and future rates of Antarctic sub-ice shelf melting and linkages to global climate processes. The candidate will be expected to perform outstanding research in the field of Southern Ocean climate across a wide range of scales within the context of Earth system modeling. This position will be filled at either the Scientist 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. For the Scientist 2 ($91,800 - $151,400) position, the successful candidate will: Perform independent research in theoretical and computational modeling of Southern Ocean climate processes. Publish research in leading scientific journals. Recruit and mentor students and postdocs. Work in a team environment to solve problems in support of DOE Laboratory missions.
Additional Requirements for a Scientist 3 ($101,000 - $168,600) include the ability to: Lead and guide interdisciplinary teams, possibly encompassing both theorists and experimentalists, to develop new theoretical and computational tools for the modeling and simulation of the earth system. Recruit and mentor junior staff. Provide leadership in preparing proposals that guide future research directions of the group.
| | | | | | What You Need Minimum Job Requirements: Desired Skills: Education Required: A Ph.D. in applied mathematics, computational science, physics, earth sciences, fluid dynamics, climate modeling, civil engineering, geophysics, or a closely related field. | | | | | | Where You Will WorkLocated in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns. Los Alamos National Laboratory is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. The position is within the Climate, Ocean and Sea-Ice Modeling (COSIM) Team, which develops advanced ocean and ice models for the study of climate (e.g., the Model for Prediction Across Scales - MPAS) within the Department of Energy’s Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM). A particular focus of E3SM is fully-coupled, global, high- and variable-resolution simulations of the Earth system. Within this broad activity, Los Alamos National Laboratory’s responsibilities include developing and optimizing ocean and ice models for use on DOE’s high performance computing platforms; studying ocean and ice dynamics in the climate system; and simulating the interaction of the atmosphere, ocean, sea ice, and ice sheets to study their influence on climate change and sea-level rise. | | | | | | Additional Details: *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information. No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
