The work will use E3SM’s ice sheet component, the mature MPAS-Albany Land Ice (MALI) modeling framework, which is also being applied to sea level projections from Antarctica. Work will focus on the development of MALI applied to Greenland and its coupling within E3SM (including surface mass balance calculated within E3SM’s land model component). Additionally, the position may include analysis and publication on both stand-alone and coupled ice sheet simulations, application of new optimization and initialization methods, and the application of new model physics (e.g. subglacial hydrology and iceberg calving). The long-term goal for the position will be projections of sea level change from the Greenland Ice Sheet calculated within the coupled E3SM Earth system model and analysis of ice sheet interactions with other components of the climate system.
