The Computational Earth Science Group (EES-16; www.lanl.gov/EES-16) in the Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is looking for exceptional postdoctoral candidates in a range of disciplines and application areas. The Group focuses on a broad array of energy, environmental, and national security challenges including:
The Computational Earth Science Group addresses these challenges using multiple computational techniques and simulation tools including computational fluid dynamics (CFD), machine learning, reduced-order modeling, massively parallel high performance computing (HPC), data analytics, physics-based models of the environment, hydrological models, GIScience/GIS, and operations research/optimization. The Group’s research includes both fundamental and applied science ranging from subsurface to atmospheric phenomena, including collaboration with experimentalists to measure unique subsurface, surface, and atmospheric signatures. The successful candidate or candidates will work as part of a dynamic team developing cutting-edge approaches (methodologies and computational tools) to tackle pressing national and global challenges. Example projects include:
Fossil Energy focused on improving extraction efficiency of unconventional oil/gas fields, safe long-term storage of CO2 through application of predictive science, high-performance computing, and machine learning.
Applicants are not restricted to the example projects; these are used to highlight current challenges the Group is addressing. However, the Group is looking for exceptional candidates and this must include a proven track record of excellent scientific research and publishing.
What You Need
Desired Skills:
Education and background: A Ph.D. in a field related to our Group’s challenges, including geology and geosciences, atmospheric sciences, engineering (e.g., environmental, civil, mechanical), applied mathematics, computer science, physics, hydrology, and geography. The candidate must have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of the appointment and be within five years of completion of the Ph.D.
Candidates with previous postdoctoral experience are also strongly encouraged to apply. Applications will be reviewed almost immediately and candidates of interest will be notified with a very short turnaround.
Notes to Applicants:
To apply, please submit an online application including your résumé and a cover letter that includes a short research statement (not to exceed one page). The cover letter should include a short biography (2-3 lines), research interests, and future career goals. Research interests in your cover letter should be aligned with the Group’s challenges; candidates are encouraged to contact relevant scientists in the Group (see www.lanl.gov/EES-16 for more information). Please contact Richard Middleton (rsm@lanl.gov) for more information.
Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.
Additional Details:
No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
Candidates may be considered for a Director's Postdoc Fellowship and outstanding candidates may be considered for the prestigious Richard P. Feynman, Darleane Christian Hoffman, J. Robert Oppenheimer, or Frederick Reines Distinguished Postdoc Fellowships.
