Communications Specialist 2 ($66,600–$105,700)
Develop a Laboratory-wide social media strategy and drive its execution by implement specific initiatives including creating a social media plan and the day-to-day execution of posts on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and other emerging/relevant social media tools.
Advise and collaborate with other Laboratory communications and media relations colleagues on how to integrate social media into news releases, conferences, and other forums as well as enhance the scope of their media placements with press-friendly social media strategies and tactics.
Monitor references to the Laboratory and related conversations and respond as appropriate.
Regularly review the sites of other laboratories, scientific institutions, government agencies, universities and other related organizations for best practices and incorporate as appropriate into the Laboratory’s unique communications environment.
Identify social media-related opportunities for promoting the Laboratory, including establishing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, influencers and community partners.
Use and manage the Laboratory’s social media platforms in an emergency or issue-based crisis using solid judgment and strategic practices.
Communications Specialist 3 ($72,500–$118,200)
In addition to the duties outlined above, the Communications Specialist 3 will have advanced working experience with social media and communication strategies.The position requires the ability to synthesize complex scientific and technical subjects and translate them into compelling and readable text for range of diverse audiences.In addition, the incumbent must demonstrate political acumen and an understanding of science, national security, and policy communications as well as the ability to serve as a credible advisor.
This position will be filled at either the 2 or 3 level, depending on the knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience of the selected candidate.Additional job responsibilities or job complexities will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated ability to advance a communications strategy using social media and other digital media channels and implement it from start to finish.
Experience creating and managing an editorial calendar and then using it to create, edit and format digital content for use on social media, Laboratory web sites and for use by the news media. Deliverables would include video, audio, animations, infographics, GIFs, and motion graphics.
Experience in prospecting with a diverse set of people, such as scientists, engineers, and communications staffers with the ability to repurpose or reuse content in better ways on social media.
Experience serving as a contributing writer, copy editor and editor for online communications and publications.
The ability to identify, adapt, organize, and take photos and videos to maximize their regular, frequent, scheduled and effective use on all channels with key audiences.
Proven track record using metrics to measure effectiveness of communications initiatives and make course corrections based on data results.
Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, communications, marketing or related degree. At least 5 years of professional communications, digital content creation, social media, professional writing experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Job Requirements for Communications Specialist 3
Experience working in a complex scientific and/or government research and development facility and/or national security organization.
Proven ability to develop and execute communications strategies — including message development — designed to support communications goals and objectives.
Ability to synthesize complex scientific and technical subjects and translate them into compelling and readable text for range of diverse audiences.
Exceptional writing, editorial, copywriting, judgment, and proofreading skills for both print and online venues.
Political acumen and an understanding of science, national security, and policy communications.
