The Scientist 2/3 will support and develop programmatic and R&D efforts in the Bioscience (B) Division at LANL. Successful candidates will work on multi-disciplinary projects involving topics such as genomics and bioinformatics, biosecurity, bio-surveillance, bioenergy, environmental microbiology, biophysical chemistry and structural biology. In addition, the Scientist 2/3 will be a key contributor to the growth and productivity of the Division by developing new mission-relevant science programs and writing research proposals to compete for internal and external funding. Working with peers, this position will be responsible for the development, implementation and completion of project objectives and will communicate results through internal reports, progress reports, formal presentations and peer reviewed publications. This position will be filled at either the Scientist 2 or 3 level, depending on the credentials of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities will be assigned if the candidate is employed at the higher level.

The work in the Biosecurity and Public Health (B-10) group specializes in methods to understand and prevent the spread of infectious disease, supporting a wide range of sponsors. The group uses advanced genomic technologies and bioinformatics strategies in diverse applications to identify and detect disease. Other areas of focus are molecular mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions; identification of new disease biomarkers; and analyzing and engineering biomolecules for drug development.
The mission of the Bioenergy and Biome Sciences (B-11) group includes enhancing biomass growth, oil production and photosynthetic efficiency in biofuel feedstocks. Members of the group work on microbiome characterization, elucidation of biochemical pathways, structural biology, enzyme function discovery and organic synthesis.
